Repetition is a powerful tool for catching the listener’s attention, especially when you set and expectation and break it later. A drone note, an ostinato, a persistent beat, are all great hooks to keep the listener entertained.
Prompt: write a song exploring repetition

I’m wanted to try something different today, so I sampled some drum patterns along with bass & guitar parts that I played. I added a few synth parts and kicks to round it out.
The bass is a fretless Fender Jazz Bass & the guitar is a Tele parts-caster I built. The rest was done on the Elektron Digitakt II and Digitone II.
Well, unfortunately, I headed right in to jamming around with repetition and realized that a tempo and a key were given only after I had finished the jam, well … sorry for that!
Day 9. I think I got a little better song out today. Although I didn’t have much time to do it. Tomorrow I might think it’s not that good. My songs have been quite repetitive, so I didn’t change much here. Tempo: 111 bpm, key: Ab

I included several repeating elements in this cinematic-like piece, starting with a steady pulse beat and a motif consisting of chimes and piano. I then layered a simple melody played by strings which is then repeated by a solo piano at the end.

and then I though hangon, what’s wrong here. its that pesky tempo that I can’t make work with my style and I’m just baking this style so what if I change it up to a tempo I can groove to. and now take two, live from the stairwell and much more in my style. think it is in A-flat minor. definitely plenty of repetition but I am going for a bit of hypnotic…
This one really spilled out quick and I’m super happy with it. Probably one of my faves so far. Prompt was a good excuse to try one of the premeditated ideas I had before January started, which was to build a nice section, bounce it out then play the bounced copy over the top with a different loop length creating nice delay effects and canons in the melody lines.
I think it worked out really well. Could do with a bit of percussion and the sections being a bit more defined but that can be sorted in the Jamuary wrap up!
